Dry Eye Syndrome

Dry eye syndrome results when the body cannot produce enough tears to keep the front of the surface of the eye lubricated. The surface of the eyes become irritated and dry, and the quality of vision decreases. Symptoms of dry eyes include pain, itching, redness, blurred vision, light sensitivity, frequent tearing, foreign body sensation, and sore or tender eyes. There are many causes for dry eyes:

• Aging
• Contact lens wear
• Heaters and air conditioners
• Wind, smoke, or dry weather
• Allergies
• Medications
• Eyelid problems, injuries to the eye, or diseases like rheumatoid arthritis
• Prolonged reading or computer work

There are many forms of therapy for treating dry eyes, including artificial tears, lubricant ointments, and punctal occlusions for partial or total blockage of the tear film. Other therapies include nutritional supplements and both oral and topical medications.

Sometimes, it isn't the quantity of tears, but rather the quality of tears that is causing dry eye syndrome.  For some patients, watering eyes can actually be an indicator of dry eye syndrome. This is a special form of dry eye, called evaporative dry eye, which is also treatable with medications or minor office procedures.

It is common to suffer from dry eye syndrome living in Colorado. If you suffer from any of these symptoms, you should be treated by an ophthalmologist to make your eyes more healthy and comfortable.
