What type of disorders are treated with oculofacial surgery?

Oculofacial surgery is treatment of any condition that affects the eyelid or soft tissue around the eye.  This includes eyelid surgery, tear duct surgery, orbital surgery, and forehead and cheek disorders.

What are the symptoms?

Decreased peripheral vision, the need to lift lids with fingers to see more, or eye redness and irritation if the lower lids are turned out.

Will insurance cover the procedure?

If an eyelid disorder causes decreased peripheral vision or causes irritation to the eye, the procedure is covered by insurance.  Most surgical procedures done with our doctors are covered by insurance.

What is tear duct surgery?

Tear ducts can become blocked and cause constant tearing, discharge and infections.  Surgery can open up or bypass tear duct to stop tearing.

Oculofacial Surgery

Oculofacial surgery is a highly specialized field that focuses on the tissues that support and surround the eye.  The function of the eyelid is to protect the eye without obstructing vision.  When eyelid function is impaired by laxity, lesions, trauma or disease, the eye is in danger of exposure and infection

The functions of the eyelids are to protect the eye without obstructing vision.  There are various conditions that affect one of the above functions.  The most common conditions are:
Ptosis:  droopy upper lids decreases peripheral vision superiorly
Ectropion:  loose and sagging lower lids leads to irritation of the eye
Entropion: lower lid turns in and eyelashes rub on eye and cause irritation
Dermatochalasis:  Extra upper eyelid skin that causes hooding and decreased peripheral vision
Eyelid skin lesions: lesions can be benign or malignant skin cancers.  Benign lesions can be removed with minor procedures.  Sometimes skin cancers can grow faster and can invade more of the eyelid.  Removing bigger lesions require reconstructive surgery to re create a new eyelid that can still protect the eye.
Blocked tear ducts:  This can lead to tearing, discharge and infection.
Cosmetic procedures including blepharoplasty to remove excess eyelid skin, brow lifts and injectables also falls under oculofacial surgery and to learn more, visit the Aesthetics website.
